Interpretable Objects & The Secret
Two related works for the truth detectives exhibition about "the self" started from opposite poles. "Interpretable objects" used numbers to create sculptures that were exact mathematical interpretations of the artist's relationships with friends, families & colleagues over 40 years of his life; It was produced through critical discussions with the artist group at the Space36 residency and shown in an open space. The second work "The Secret" was produced in parallel but in private, through a deeply personal and intensive studio-based process, and shown as an immersive installation in an intimate space, accessable to no more than 2 people at a time.
Brexitopia, city of dreams
Made in collaboration with Esperanza Gomez Carrera for The Republic of Brexitopia exhibition. Visitors were invited to build Brexitopia at the gallery using 2 simple elements: bricks to build walls and columns to rise above them. What they built was up to them. Brexitopia, the city of dreams mutated throughout the exhibition as participants (usually collectively) shaped the architecture to their desires
The Hunt
Created for Space36 during the 2017 residency, human and animal motifs from ancient cave paintings were used to overwrite & disrupt an existing work on the wall (the Shield) with a hunting scene. This site responsive installation alludes to the nightmare that lurks at the back of every migrant’s mind, including that of the artist, that one day one will be chased out of one's home.
But for the darkness
Participative installation created for Waiting to Exhale, on perceptions of home and belonging under the threat of to Brext, featuring keys as passports into other people's lives. Ceremonies mark their giving and taking:"I trust you", "you belong". Visitors were free to take away a key if they felt they belonged here.
